This semester will prove to be a complex one. We’re in the second week of rehearsals for Waiting for Lefty, which opens March 1. However, I am also stage managing Fashion, which opens April 12. I have a very good ASM for Lefty, Karin, who is being referred to among the department here as “heir to the throne”. I still need to find an ASM for Fashion.
The real complexity comes in tonight. From 7:00 to 10:30, Lefty rehearses Scene 5. From 7:00 to 10:00, Fashion has its first rehearsal. Now, I learn the art of delegation and the art of being two places at once. My first problem: find an ASM for Fashion.
In this space, I plan to give a step by step view of what it is a stage manager does. It was pointed out to me during my last show that it really isn’t all that obvious. I’d like to change that, so that, at the least, my family can understand what it is I do. During Fashion, I’ll try to give some insights into my work in the theater.
